ALERT! These Cars Will Snitch On You — The Carmudgeon Show Jason Cammisa & Derek Tam-Scott — Ep 143
Your Honda, Acura, Hyundai or Kia is selling driving data to insurance companies as an excuse to hurt enthusiasts. And that is disgusting.
UPDATE: General Motors has cancelled its OnStar Smart Driver System, which means you can safely keep driving your Blackwing like it was meant to be driven.

It has recently come to light that three major auto manufacturers have been selling consumer driving data to LexisNexis so that it can be sold to your insurance company and used against you to raise your rates or cancel your insurance.
Not only is this a gross violation of your expectation of privacy, but it's also a flawed ...

Speaking of joy, one of the most joyful drives I've ever had was in a Civic HX hatch with manual trans, manual steering, about 1900 pounds, and well under 100 HP. Big glassy view out, infinite feel through the tiny tires, and could drive 10/10. Would hoon again.

I'm a Canadian tech and privacy lawyer. Jason mentions that the driving behavior data collection and sale would probably not be legal in Europe under the GDPR. It would not be legal under Canadian privacy laws unless car owners gave explicit informed consent - ie not buried in a manual or policy. In fact, the data broker industry as it exists in the US violates Canadian Privacy laws. My only car magazine claim to fame is a letter to the editor that was published in Feb 2018 Automobile Magazine where I questioned what auto manufacturers would do with our data. I said "I'm not eager to share my driving data with an insurer so an algorithm designed by a bureaucrat who buys cars based solely on colour will penalize me if I have an occasional harmless heavy foot on either pedal." And I asked the question about car companies "Will they avoid purpose creep and resist the temptation to use, sell, or share personal information for new things or to governments or insurers who want it for specious reasons?" I guess we now know the answer to that.

Good show, but perpetrating the cost cutting myths after merger. The SL was not really affected, other than modular engines. A/C unit same as in the W140, praised for its build quality, Nappa leather not cheap, and post 2nd facelift models got the V12 Brembo brakes (ventilated f & r) as standard, with 17 inch wheels. You should try a late European V6. My SL280 has 204hp only but much lighter engine corners flat with little understeer and is perfect for french country roads.

I have been bitching about the brightness of lights, (ESPECIALLY GM TRUCKS) for years. However, this is not limited to civilian vehicles. Law enforcement and emergency vehicle flashers have gotten so bad, that you can’t even look in the direction of the road when you are within 200 yards of them. Not stopping there…signage on the road has gotten obscenely bright as well, to the point that when your lights hit them, you can’t even read what the sign says.

Excellent discussion; sad conclusion😢 I wanted a new manual car before they’re all gone. Plan is to keep it for 8-10 years and enjoy the engagement of 3 pedals. I was lucky to get an allocation for a Cayman GTS 4.0 in this final model year. Agreed that 3 pedals work best with a naturally aspirated engine, and in the Cayman, it’s glorious. It will share my garage with a daily driver EV, because that’s their strength. But weekends and road trips will be the realm of a flat 6 wail paired with 3 pedals.

Worse still, chevy bolt, that monstrosity has the brake light down in the bumper area, while still have lights up there that serves as night time running light only. So during a sunny day, when a bolt in front of you start to brake, what you think is the brake light doesn't light up (the middle mounted light does nothing and we all know that now) and what lights up makes you think it's just your regular reflector shining under the sun, because guess what, every other car has the reflector down in the bumper and brake light up on the hatch except this thing.

In the past, the Hyundai Blue Link app default setting was to collect your data. If somebody didn't tell you or you didn't monkey around with the app, you wouldn't know. There was a point where you could go in and turn it off. Now if you look at the Blue Link app now, they've done away with it. I've got a really brilliant one. My best friend's wife was getting a discount for her good driving record, and not driving a lot. She works from home and would drive him to work daily which was a 10 mile round trip. When I moved to the area, I started driving him back and forth to work for her. After a month, her insurance company contacted her and asked why she's driving even less. Get this... They dropped her discount for not driving a lot, because she was not driving ENOUGH.... 😅

I am interested in your thoughts on plug in hybrids. Seems to me that they can mask a lot of those annoying delays like turbo lag with the electric motor and get full electric commute but still be viable for longer trips. I still can't consider a full electric as my only, or even main car. I frequently go on 300 mile trips over mountains and stay at friends houses who don't have chargers. I don't want to spend my valuable trip time at a charger. A plug-in hybrid seems like a nice middle ground for now.

Just received a notice from GM: Based on Customer Feedback, GM is Discontinuing Smart Driver 2024-04-24 View Assets DETROIT - At GM, we believe that vehicles are not just modes of transportation - they're also technology platforms that can enrich our customers’ lives. Vehicles have become increasingly connected, intelligent, and personalized with features that improve the overall driving experience and safety on every journey. As our technology progresses, we are committed to being transparent in our privacy practices and empowering customers with control of their data. Over the last several weeks, we have heard feedback from many customers about the OnStar Smart Driver product. Customer trust is a priority for us, which is why we have taken several decisive actions and are continuing to review our processes: Discontinuing OnStar Smart Driver: We established the Smart Driver product to promote safer driving behavior for the benefit of customers who chose to participate. However, we’ve decided to discontinue Smart Driver across all GM vehicles and unenroll all customers. This process will begin over the next few months. Terminating partnerships with LexisNexis and Verisk: We terminated our relationships with third-party telematics companies, LexisNexis and Verisk. Any data sharing with these companies ended on March 20, 2024. Enhancing privacy controls: We are working on enhanced privacy controls aimed at greater transparency. At the same time, we are focused on providing customers with the ability to manage vehicle performance, diagnostics and, most importantly, what is needed to keep them and their vehicles safe. New leadership: Alisa Bergman will join General Motors as our new Chief Trust and Privacy Officer on April 29, 2024. She comes to GM from Fanatics, where she served as Chief Privacy Officer (CPO), and before that held the roles of CPO at Adobe and Warner Bros. She was a Board member for the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) and is currently on the Advisory Boards of the IAPP AI Governance Center and The Future of Privacy Forum. We appreciate hearing from customers and will continue to share updates on our progress.

It was doubtless sold to management as a security feature for people getting out of tier cars in the dark. After waiting 2 or 3 times for somebody to back-up because their back-up lights are on, only to find out that there is nobody in the car, most people will just start ignoring them.
